How to measure stair rods...

Our stair rods are made to measure, so we need a tip to tip measurement for them, including the finial. Whilst the majority of the stair has a regular distance between the edge of the carpet and the stringboard or spindles, check to see if a newel post or other obstruction affects the required length of rod on that step. The guide below gives information on measuring and installing stair rods.

All rods should be 10cm (4 inches) over the width of the carpet (5cm/2 inches over each side).

The above applys for all ranges, except: Royale Louis, Royale Beaumont and Blacksmith Spear. These rods have large finials, so therefore we would recommend adding 15cm (6 inches) over the width of the carpet
(7.5cm/3 inches each side).

We recommend fitting a stair rod on the bottom step.

Installing stair rods...

The bracket should sit on the stair case itself, directly alongside the carpet. Make bradawl guide holes for the screws and then screw the bottom half of the bracket to the stair. Do the same on the other side and then lay the stair rod in the brackets and screw the top half of the bracket to the bottom, ensuring the rod is protruding an equal amount on each end.

On no account should the top and bottom of each hinged bracket be mixed as they are a set, they cannot be interchanged with the other brackets, so we recommend not mixing the bracket components when preparing them for fitting. Note:Stair rods are for decorative use only, the carpet must be secured by another means.

Installing door thresholds...

The carpet in your doorway should be fitted with carpet gripper. Position the wings of the threshold so that they are over the gripper, as shown below. This is important, as it prevents the pins of the gripper coming through the carpet, and also acts as a solid base to fit the thresholds on to.
Before screwing the threshold to the floor, ensure that the adhesive tape is removed from the countersunk holes, where necessary. If the tape remains in the countersink, the screw head may sit too high, causing difficulty when applying the decorative insert strip. When fixing, ensure the screws are straight and the heads do not protrude into the centre channel.
Ensure the threshold is screwed down as tightly as possible, because if there is any movement in the threshold the fixing screws will push the self adhesive inlay out.

Stair Rods FAQ's

Will our products need polishing?
No, all our brass products (except for Posh Door Thresholds) have a clear laquer that prevents them from tarnishing. To clean, simply wipe with a damp cloth. DO NOT use metal cleaning products as this will damage the laquer, causing tarnishing and damage to any finish you may have chosen. Clean polished brass finish Posh with a metal polish such as Brasso.

Can stair rods be altered once ordered?
No, our stair rods are all made to measure as the ends are part of the rods. It is vital to carefully measure the rods before ordering to ensure the lengths are correct as they cannot be altered once they have been made.

Can the rods be used as the sole means of securing the carpet?
With the exception of our Stargrip range, we strongly recommend that the carpet is installed by other means. Fitting the carpet correctly increases its lifespan and improves the safety of the stair case.
